Alabama vehicle registration renewal military
Prior to purchasing this plate, the veteran must provide a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs disability rating certification and one of the following:
- Proper military identification card
- DD214
- Affidavit from Veteran Affairs
Registration Fees:
Disability rating of 10% to 50%:
- The first plate is exempt from registration fees and license plate issuance fees. The registrant is NOT exempt from ad valorem taxes.
- Registrant must pay all applicable registration fees and license plate issuance fees for subsequent license plates.
Disability rating of 51% and higher or vehicle has special mechanical control devices:
- The first plate is exempt from the registration fees and license plate issuance fees. The registrant is NOT exempt from ad valorem taxes.
- Registrant must pay a $5 annual fee for subsequent license plates.
Vehicle all or partly paid for by U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs:
- All license plates are exempt from registration fees and ad valorem taxes (Section 40-12-254).
Disabled veterans are not required to obtain the Disabled Veteran distinctive license plate in order to claim the registration fee(s) exemption/reduction.
